Be A Bold “YES!” To Your Life! 5 Steps to Get You Started

People want their life to be exciting, adventurous, unique and filled with passion and purpose, don’t you think? It seems to me it could easily be that way if it weren’t for the fact that we, as a culture, have cultivated a few habits and patterns that make this virtually impossible.

We have attached ourselves to a very sophisticated, but deadly, toxin that we have mistakenly believed to be in our best interest. I’m referring to the energy-syphoning, creativity-killing, and innovation-in-flames, burning desire to look good, get things right and do things perfectly. When you add to that the other cultivated deadly disease of wanting to be safe and comfortable, we’re dead in the water.

We have become disengaged, listless, overwhelmed, burdened, dull and uninspired because these well-intended, stealthily disguised beliefs and patterns are stealing our aliveness and sucking the very breath from our bodies.

But it truly doesn’t need to be this way. To live a vibrant life, you simply need to be a bold YES! to whatever comes your way. It’s easy really – when you discover the way, it will fill your life with energy, aliveness and possibilities, and you will no longer be bothered by what doesn’t work . . .

How? Join us for Radical Leadership and we’ll show you. It’s easier and faster than you might think.

Below are five, simple disciplines that will get you started.

Step 1: Say YES to the crazy critic (a.k.a. the Trickster as we call it in Radical Leadership)

You know the old saying; “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer?” That applies because we’re referring to the voice inside your head (can’t get much closer than that!) You know that voice that is constantly yakking away, telling you you’re not enough.

This condemning and condescending voice is having its way with us most of the time, and we spend an enormous amount of energy when we keep fighting it, resisting it, following it, and engaging what it has to say.

Instead of giving it all that energy, just give in! Now, that doesn’t mean you believe what it has to say, nor do you act on it. Just let these critical thoughts come and go quickly and in peace without giving them any energy. (Sort of like smiling and waving at the neighbor as they drive by.)

Imagine the implications of that. What would be possible in your life if you could be intentional about not believing all the “should, have to, ought to” thoughts that run through your head? Imagine the energy you’ll save, and how much more fun you’ll be freed up to have!

Step # 2: Be unattached to looking good, being right or doing things perfectly.

Did you know that what we can’t be with runs our life? Have you ever heard the statement, “if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing wrong?”

When we live inside our conditioning (beliefs) that we need to look good, get things right, and do things perfectly, we don’t put ourselves out there in life and, as a result, we live small, contracted, uninspiring lives.

To live life as an adventure means stretching out into the unknown – making mistakes, looking occasionally awkward and not having all the answers. This requires us to expand our horizons far beyond anything that we could know (or should know for that matter) which makes life a rich, delightful surprise!

If you have to be polished, perfect and already have the answer for everything, how can you ever take risks, seek challenges or pioneer possibilities? You can’t! Instead, you’ll have to stay right where you are, which is why so many people are disengaged. (Gallup research shows 3 out of every 4 people working are actively disengaged.) We become disengaged when we abandon our spirit, heart and creativity and trade them in for a false sense of security, which leaves us feeling uninspired, unchallenged, under valued, stressed out and bored.

Commit to living life fully engaged, vibrant and alive, then welcome awkward moments and imperfections as a rich part of your movement to mastery. Doing this will infuse your life with innovation, aliveness, energy and wisdom.

Step 3: Embrace discomfort.

Would you really like to feel free?

You can, and it’s really quite simple. All you have to do is to embrace both comfort and discomfort, and you will have exquisite sovereignty over your own life in a way that you may never have known before.

Embracing both comfort and discomfort without attachment opens the world of endless possibilities unabashedly.

Simply eliminate any preference for comfort or discomfort. Let both of these feelings serve you as “Inns” on the road to discovery, adventure and personal mastery. Stop in and rest in them as they come before you. Look deeply and see what’s there for you. Befriend them both with divine curiosity, and neither will be able to bind you with restricting or limiting boundaries ever again.

Do this, and you will be free and totally uninhibited to stretch into and leverage every moment in life making your whole life’s journey rich with wonder and excitement.

Step 4: Create from your contractions.

Are you aware that our cultural conditioning has us automatically contracting, reacting and shrinking from our environment routinely, and most of the time without our even realizing it?

Contracting is often a form of resistance, and what we resist, not only persists, but it grows stronger. So the very thing we don’t want is likely the very thing we will create with our contraction.

To get an idea of what I’m speaking about, consider these things:

  • What happens when you compare yourself to someone?
  • What does your body do when your boss or spouse gives you a directive?
  • What happens to your breathing when you believe the critical thoughts inside your head?

In each moment, we are either expanding or contracting. Instead of reacting to your thoughts, people, places or things, use them as opportunities to identify, clarify and create more of what you want instead.

Step 5: Fall in love with commitment.

Everything you want can and will be shaped by your commitments. Find something you want and close all exits! Commitment is the fuel that powers possibility and your bold, unwavering “YES!” has the power to create miracles. Your commitments will define you, refine you and forge your character with fortitude.

Make commitments that inspire you, scare you, and that are bigger than you. You will find yourself automatically living your life as an exciting adventure, and you will be able to author your life any way you please.

How? It’s easy really – when you discover the way, it will fill your life with energy, aliveness and possibilities, and you will no longer be bothered by what doesn’t work.
